Disconnect to Reconnect: How Mental Noise Impacts Your Body, Your Training, and Your Life

August 18, 2025 By The Factory Team

Let’s be real—sometimes the toughest part of your training session isn’t the push‑ups or the sprints. It’s clearing out the mental clutter long enough to actually tune in. Between buzzing phones, half-thought emails, and that nagging to-do list, we often feel more drained before even hitting the mat.

But here’s the cool part: that constant mental noise? It does more than just distract you. It impacts your brain, your motivation, and yes—your workouts.

At The Factory, we lean into training as more than physical. It’s a chance to unplug from distraction and plug into your inner strength, focus, and intention.

The Hidden Cost of Being Always “On”

Multitasking might feel efficient, but science suggests otherwise. Your brain enters a mode called continuous partial attention—you’re “present” everywhere, but fully nowhere. The consequences?

  • A shrinking working memory (ever walk into a room and forget why you came? Yep.)
  • Elevated cortisol, which makes stress recovery and muscle recovery both harder.
  • Reduced cognitive flexibility—so your mind feels like it’s stuck in slow-mo while your body hustles.

In short: we get busier, but we lose clarity—and that’s the opposite of what training is supposed to deliver.

Exercise as a Brain Reset

Here’s where it gets interesting. When done intentionally, exercise is one of the most effective ways to shake off mental overload.

Consider BDNF, or Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor. Think of it as “Miracle-Gro” for your brain—it supports new neuron growth, enhances connections between brain cells, and powers up regions tied to learning, memory, and focus

Exercise—especially moderate to high-intensity aerobic work—can increase BDNF production up to threefold. What’s even more powerful? It’s not just strength in the gym—it’s rewiring your brain to be sharper, more resilient, and more present.

Even One Session Makes Waves

Here’s the best part: you don’t need weeks to feel something shift. A single, focused workout—around 20–30 minutes—can lower stress, quiet that buzzing mental chatter, and leave you with clarity, not exhaustion.

So remember when you’re tempted to skip because you don’t feel like it? That session is still doing brain-level work—even better if you’re showing up on autopilot.

Growing Your Mental Muscle

Speaking of showing up—Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman often talks about how doing something you don’t want to do—like dragging yourself to the gym—actually strengthens your brain. Specifically, it grows the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC), which is tied to motivation, grit, and willpower.

So that workout you’re mentally battling against? That’s the one your brain is most eager to reward you for. Huberman emphasized this powerful idea in a recent Huberman Lab discussion: pushing into discomfort strengthens not just your body, but your mental resolve too.

How to Disconnect to Reconnect at The Factory

Here’s how we turn this science into real-world, in-gym tools:

  • No-phone zone. Let your phone rest while you train. Distractions off, presence on.
  • Check in with your senses. Feel your breath, the weight of your muscles, your movement through space.
  • Choose quality over quantity. Focus beats frantic every time.
  • Honor the hard days. Remember: that’s where you’re building both your body and your brain.

Where This Leaves You

Every time you train at The Factory, you’re not only sculpting muscle. You’re cultivating mental strength—rewiring your brain, boosting your resilience, and setting the stage for long-term clarity and growth.

So next time you’re tempted to bail on a workout? That’s precisely the moment that counts. Your brain—and your body—are doing essential work. Let’s honor that.
