Fixed vs. Growth Mindset: What It Means for Your Health, Fitness, and Life

September 15, 2025 By The Factory Team

Athletes often hear that the weight room is full of life lessons. The truth is, it’s not just a catchy phrase—it’s real. What we learn under the barbell, on the track, or in the middle of a tough workout extends far beyond the gym. Discipline, resilience, patience, and the ability to push through discomfort are the same qualities that help us grow in relationships, navigate careers, and face life’s inevitable challenges.

(If you’re someone who has adopted a consistent gym routine, pause to give yourself a pat on the back. And if you’re here reading this, also pause to acknowledge the effort it takes to take the first step in learning more.)

This idea of transcendence is at the heart of the fixed vs. growth mindset—a concept introduced by psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck in her groundbreaking book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Dweck’s research revealed that how we view our own abilities—whether as something fixed and unchangeable, or as something that can grow through effort—shapes not only our achievements but also our overall fulfillment in life.

How we think about our potential—whether we see our abilities as limited or expandable—doesn’t just shape our health and fitness journey. It impacts our confidence, our relationships, and even how we approach opportunities across the lifespan.

Fixed vs. Growth Mindset in Fitness (and Beyond)

Let’s break it down:

  • Fixed Mindset in fitness might sound like:
    “I’m just not a runner.”
“I’ll never be strong enough to lift that weight.”
“I don’t have the discipline to stick to a diet.”
  • Growth Mindset reframes it to:
“Running feels hard right now, but with practice I can improve.”
“I may not be lifting that weight yet, but I can build toward it.”
“Discipline is like a muscle—I can strengthen it over time.”

Here’s the important thing: it’s not all-or-nothing. Many of us have a growth mindset in one area of life—like career development—while holding a fixed mindset in others, like health or relationships. Recognizing where you fall on that spectrum is the first step toward change.

The Ripple Effect: Life Lessons That Transcend the Gym

Although we often talk about health and fitness in these blogs, the truth is these lessons extend into nearly every area of life:

  • Relationships: Instead of “I’m just bad at communicating,” a growth mindset sees communication as a skill you can practice and improve.
  • Career: Instead of “I’ll never be leadership material,” it becomes “I can develop leadership skills through training and experience.”
  • Personal Goals: Instead of “I’m not creative,” it becomes “Creativity is something I can nurture with the right habits.”

When you begin shifting your perspective in one area—like your workouts—you’ll notice the same mindset shift spilling over into other parts of life. What starts in the weight room can carry with you into every season of life.

How to Practice a Growth Mindset Daily

Changing your mindset is a practice, not a flip of a switch. Here are a few ways to begin:

  1. Catch your self-talk. Notice when you use “always” or “never” statements. Replace them with “not yet” or “I’m learning.”
  2. Celebrate progress, not perfection. That extra rep, a little better sleep, or choosing water over soda—those are wins.
  3. Lean into challenges. Instead of avoiding hard workouts or uncomfortable conversations, see them as opportunities to grow.
  4. Surround yourself with growth. The people you train with, work with, or spend time with shape how you see possibility.

Final Thought

Mindset is the foundation for growth—not just in the gym, but across your entire life. Shifting from fixed to growth thinking doesn’t mean ignoring your struggles; it means embracing them as part of the process.

The more you practice, the more natural it becomes—and the more you open yourself up to evolving in fitness, health, relationships, and career. Because the lessons learned under the barbell aren’t meant to stay there; they’re meant to help you grow across the lifespan.
