There’s something about the turning of the seasons that invites reflection. Even though the heat outside might suggest otherwise, fall has a way of nudging us to slow down, breathe, and take stock. The leaves change and eventually let go, reminding us of the quiet strength in releasing what no longer serves us.
Lately, I’ve been challenging myself to lean into the stillness of this season of life—to truly be present where my feet are (thank you, Penny, for the constant reminder). It’s not always easy. Growth mindsets and resilience sound bold and strong, yet sometimes resilience looks like softening, pausing, and giving yourself permission to simply let go.
What Are You Holding On To?
The truth is, many of us cling tightly—to mistakes, to outdated goals, to beliefs that no longer align with who we are becoming. Often, it’s not the weight of new challenges that keeps us from moving forward, but the old stories we keep retelling ourselves.
A growth mindset invites us to see setbacks as opportunities. Resilience calls us to keep building, brick by brick. Reflection, though, asks us to pause and notice: What am I carrying that I don’t need anymore?
- Is there a goal you once set that no longer fits your priorities?
- A story about yourself that needs rewriting?
- A “mistake” that could be reframed as a lesson?
You Can’t Build on Dysfunction
In fitness, we see this clearly. You can’t build strength on dysfunction. If your movement pattern is broken or an injury has forced you to compensate, piling on more weight only deepens the imbalance. Sometimes the most powerful step forward is actually a step back—to relearn, to reset, to rebuild from a solid foundation.
Life works the same way. Lasting growth can’t be built on top of old beliefs, unhealed wounds, or stories that no longer serve us. Just as the trees shed their leaves each fall, we too must release dysfunction before new growth can take root.
Permission to Release
As the trees let go of their leaves, I’ve been asking myself: What can I let go of? Which patterns or habits have been holding me back from leaning into the present? And perhaps most importantly—can I give myself permission to release them?
Letting go isn’t about giving up. It’s about creating space. Space for new growth. Space for joy. Space for the version of you that’s still unfolding.
An Invitation to Reflect
This season, I invite you to sit with these questions:
- What do I need to let go of?
- Which dysfunction in my patterns or beliefs is asking for a reset?
- What is waiting to grow if I make room for it?
- Where can I lean into stillness and be more present where I am right now?
The leaves remind us that change doesn’t have to be loud. Growth can be quiet, gentle, and intentional. And sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is simply open our hands and let go.
